My work focuses on examination of the process of creating art verses craft objects. I incorporate real social issues and conjectures about my life and translate them into the creation of well crafted art objects, thereby unifying the two conflicting theories of fine art and craft in my work. In a recent class, the two seemingly conflicting ideas were summarized for me in a way far clearer than anything I had heard before, paraphrased it was said that “craft is – the worker, and fine art is – the investor, the investment element.” This statement adhered to what I was taught in both my upbringing at my grandfathers instrument workshop, as well as what was imparted to me in art school. While craft makers create beautiful objects and invest hours of labor into their work, fine artists are conceptually investing a part of themselves in their creations. In my work I wish to explore the relationship between fine art and craft. I want to be proud and defend my work if I see it as craft, because of the labor and work that I believe is a good value for humanity to possess. I also want to be proud and defend my work if I see it as fine art. In the future I hope to continue to explore the values of community, human interaction, nature, self reliance, and self image.
